Le M I O est un laboratoire de recherche en Océanologie des Universités d’Aix Marseille, de Toulon, du CNRS et de l’IRD. Le M I O est intégré dans l’OSU Pytheas et est partenaire du Labex OT-Med. Ses objectifs sont de mieux comprendre le système océanique et son évolution en réponse au changement global. Il constitue un pôle de compétences en biologie, écologie, biodiversité, microbiologie, halieutique, physique, chimie, biogéochimie et en sédimentologie marines. Ses cadres d’exercice sont l’océan mondial, ses interfaces avec le continent, l’atmosphère et le sédiment.
Le laboratoire est issu de la fusion des unités de recherches du Centre d’Océanologie de Marseille, du LSEET, d’un chercheur de l’IRPHE et du LMBEC.
