JOURNAL OF THE DOCTORAL SCHOOL SOCIAL SCIENCES (ED 624)

In Diderot and D’Alembert’s famous Encyclopédie, the entry ‘Encyclopedia’ reads: “the purpose of an encyclopedia is to collect knowledge disseminated around the globe; to set forth its general system to the men with whom we live, and transmit it to those who will come after us, so that the work of preceding centuries will not prove useless to the centuries to come”. Such an endeavour cannot possibly be the work of a single individual, it must necessarily be a collective task. The title of our journal therefore conjures up this philosophical legacy as seems fitting for a university which bears the name of Denis Diderot and defines our intellectual aims according to the two following dynamics: firstly, to allow different scholars to share information with one another so as to enhance human knowledge and understanding; and in turn, to allow different types of knowledge to inform one another so as to enhance the humanity of the men and women involved in their production.
