Pivot agent role to collect solutions in distributed problem-solving

Résumé

In this paper we propose a cooperation model, named Mocah, to integrate heterogeneous reasoning models in a single system. Indeed, each considered reasoning model provides a limited viewpoint of the problem-solving situation and captures knowledge relevant to this viewpoint. Cooperation is necessary because no single reasoner has sufficient expertise, resources, and information to solve the whole problem. Mocah allows agents cooperate and help each other to solve a problem in a flexible way. Thus, each agent must not only reason about its own capabilities, but it must also reason about how to take advantage of other agents reasoning operations. We have experimented different kinds of cooperation strategies and analysed several cooperative scenarios in the context of a diagnostic application. The results showed that for most considered diagnosis situations; a particular reasoning model seemed to be the most adequate. As this emprical observation is important, we implemented a "pivot" agent role in our system. To preserve the flexibility of Mocah, we have identified control knowledge allowing an agent to be a candidate to the "pivot" role and use cooperation knowledge to negotiate when conflicts occur. When a pivot agent is identified by the system, it detects the end of the resolution and informs other agents to stop their individual activities. It has also in charge delivering the solution to the user.
