IMS Bordeaux : Wave-based resonant microsensors for (bio)chemical detection, environmental and health related applications

Résumé

After an introduction on IMS Bordeaux Laboratory (Integration : from Material to Systems, www.ims-bordeaux.fr) and on the group WAVES (ONDES), the talk will focus on Surface Acoustic Wave or SAW-based devices for highly sensitive and real-time chemical or biochemical sensing applications. This overview presents a versatile effort made at IMS Bordeaux labs through a large spectrum of applications investigated, among them mainly environmental and health related ones. The devices are fabricated with the collaboration of the national technological network (RTB) at LAAS-CNRS (Toulouse, France), then they are functionalized with various innovative materials developed with national or international partners specialized in chemistry and/or biotechnologies. These materials are based on organic, inorganic, hybrid materials, either natural or engineered, typically with micro- to nano-structuration and surface modification for increased sensitivity and specificity. Their integration into thin-films as well as microfluidics and other embedded features lead to microsensing platforms customized for the targeted compounds and applications. We will also discuss an increasing interest for carbonated materials such as nanotubes or graphene which could lead to unexpected sensitivities, as well as developments with microtransducers based on other resonant phenomena: flexible imprinted radio-frequency devices, polymer optical microring resonators. Together with new topics on the development of wireless solutions for micro-energy, this leads us to perspectives in wireless sensing networks.
