Modes of coordination and institutions: Towards a dynamic approach

Inspired by the neo-institutional approach, our research program sets for itself the task of contributing to the emergence of a dynamic analysis of coordination mechanisms in which institutions play a key role.
Borrowing the Davis's and North's (1971, pp. 6-7) distinction between the “institutional arrangement” and the “institutional environment”, we endeavour to provide some reflections upon the following two fundamental questions :
First, what kind of relationship exists between the coordination mechanism (market or hierarchy) and the institutional environment (property rights, political power, and ideology)?
Second, what kind of relationship exists between motivations and cognitive limits of economic agents (defining their individual behaviour) and the institutional arrangement (determining their collective behaviour)?
The present Habilitation dissertation tries to introduce our articles in relation to the above-mentioned problems.
While the first axis of my research embraces my studies on the genesis and the evolution of Janos Kornai's economic thought, the second one is devoted to the relationship between the two modern theories of firm, namely the Transaction Costs Economics and the Evolutionary Economics. A first group of my articles treat the first question, whereas a second group ruminates upon the second group. Finally, I underline the pertinence of Marshallian concept of
“normality” in order to capture the dynamic phenomena and to reconcile the conept of “equilibrium” with that of “evolution”.
