Development of the urgonian limestones in the delphino helvetic realm (Northern Subalpine Chains, Haute-Savoie, France) : sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy and biostratigraphy

Part 1: The aim of this study is to delineate the paleoenvironmental and paleogeographical evolution of Late Hauterivian - Early Aptian shelf deposits developed on the European passive margin of the Iigurian Tethys. The study was focused on the sedimentological, sequence stratigraphical and biostratigraphical development of the Urgonian limestones. Based on the investigation of numerous stratigraphie sections in the northern Subalpine Chains (Western Alps, SE-France) the shelf can be divided into 3 paleogeographic units: muddy shelf, outer-platform and inner-platform. These units can be differentiated into 7 distinct depositional environments: (1)basin, (2) slope, (3) open marine shallow-complex, (4) open lagoon, which can be subdivided into a transitional zone (4a) and a slightly protected lagoon (4b), (5) protected to semi-restricted lagoon, (6) lacustrine/brackish and (7) "transgressive". These depositional units themselves are characterized by 23 microfacies-/facies types basic units. The stratigraphie record displays a vertieal succession of large-scale- and medium-scale depositional sequence stacking patterns. The whole record of the investigated stratigraphie sections is part of a largescale depositional sequence. This shows a shallowing-upward (regressive) tendency where the hemi pelagic slope facies and the shallow-marine Urgonian platform prograded over the pelagie silty to Marly limestones of the Dauphinois Basin. This shallowing-up is considered as part of a 2nd order cycle terminating with the maximum regression in the Upper Barremian. Medium-scale depositional sequences (on average 40 m thick) are interpreted as 3rd order sequences (sensu Vail et al. 1991) built up by prograding, aggrading and backstepping stacking patterns. The age of the sequences has been established by means of benthic orbitolinid foraminifera, echinids, and ammonites, which make it possible ta correlate the sequences in a chronostratigraphic framework. Part 2 : In the SW-NE trending Aravis Mountains, which are situated in the northern Subalpine Chains (SE-France), two horizons of carbonate mass flow deposits are well exposed. These deposits or "lentils" . consist of large slide and slump blocks (up to several hundreds of meters large) embedded in a matrix of conglomerates, micrite and fine-grained carbonate particles. Mierofacies analysis indieates that the matrix and most of the megablocks are composed of circalittoral particles derived from the slope. Sorne of the megablocks are built up by shallow-water platform carbonates. Gravit y mass flows in the Aravis region are probably the result of tectonic instability during the Lower Cretaceous. These gravity mass flows are considered as lowstand deposits, and they were transported iuto the basin during a sea-Ievel fall via gravit y sliding, slumping and debris flows from both the slope and the prograding Urgonian platform. A succession of hemipelagic carbonate packages overlie the mass flow horizons and suggest a deepening of the depositlonal envIronment. They are interpreted as transgressive and highstand deposlts, separated by weil developed maximum flooding-surfaces. This 3rd order cycle is developed twice and represents the so called "Transition Zone" (Détraz et al. 1986). These two 3rd order cycles are embedded between the pelagic Hauterivian "Kieselkalk" and the shallow-water Urgonian platform carbonates. The shallowing-up from the pelagie Hauterivian "Kieselkalk" unit through to the shallow-water Urgonian limestones is part of a 2nd order cycle terminating wlth the maxImum regression in the Upper Barremian. Ammonite, echinid and orbitolinid biostratigraphy suggests a Late Hauterivian to Early Barremian age for the studied section. Biostratigraphic and sequence stratIgraphlc investIgatIons made it possible to compare the results with the Lower Cretaceous cycle chart proposed by Clavel et al. (1992)
