High fidelity simulation of the aerothermal of an impinging jet

This study focuses on the simulation of an axisymmetric jet impinging a flat wall. The study is divided into two main parts : one part is related with numerical issues and the other part is related with the physical analysis of the flow. Direct and Large Eddy Simulations (DNS/LES) are carried out using the in-house code Incompact3d. In particular, an alternative LES method using second derivative schemes in order to introduce numerical dissipation in a desired range of scale is proposed. The ability of the method to compute the impinging jet flow is demonstrated by comparing the results with measurements (PIV and IR thermography) and by comparison with other numerical approaches. The e ect of unsteadiness on the averaged heat transfers on the wall is then studied using the DNS database. Instantaneous aerothermal fields are analyzed by 3D visualizations, by computing spatio-temporal maps and PDF and by using conditional averaging techniques. Firstly, heat transfers are found to be linked with a large-scale organization connected to the convection of the primary and secondary vortices. Secondly, a small scale organization, associated with the azimuthal instability of the secondary vortex, is highlighted and linked with the occurrence of cold spots (areas of very high heat transfers). The detection of radially elongated structures in the flow is also connected with the filament propagation of cold spots.
