High resolution measurements and study of neutron inelastic scattering reaction on 56Fe
Mesures à haute résolution et étude de la réaction de diffusion inélastique de neutrons sur le 56Fe
Résumé
High resolution measurements of the neutron inelastic scattering cross section have been
carried out on an enriched 56Fe sample in the energy range from threshold (862 keV) up
to about 3 MeV. The experiments were performed using the time of flight technique on
the 200 m flight path at the G¡mqe facility (Geel, Belgium) with a neutron burst width
of less than 2 ns, leading to a very good energy resolution. Four barium fluoride
scintillators, mounted around the samples, detected the gamma-rays emitted by iron and
boron nuclei. The l0Bln,alpha-gamma)7li
reaction was used to monitor the neutron flux
and to normalize the cross section. Finally, the correlation between neutron elastic and
inelastic partial widths has been studied. Previous measurements of natural iron
transmission have also been taken into account.
