Functional imaging of the central nervous system : from entries in the CNS to complex cognitives functions in rat and non-human primates

This thesis focuses on the applications of functional ultrasound imaging (fUS) to the study of neurovascular phenomena in rats and non-human primates, in particular the study of inputs into the central nervous system and the integration of information by higher centres of cognition. Initially, it enabled us to study the integration of nociceptive information by the spinal cord in rats. A second part of this thesis allowed us, in the non-human primate, to image a fronto-medial plane containing the supplementary eye field (SEF) and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). We showed, for the first time, that the SEF allow the monitoring of motivation as well as a role of the CCA in the will and free will of the primate. Finally, we were interested in the coupling between two techniques: fUS and electrophysiology. The major interest of coupled measurements lies in the ability to directly measure local neuronal activity but also the resulting hemodynamic response, allowing us to link the neuronal response to the vascular response.
