Scalar potentials and weak gravity

Potentiels de champs scalaires et gravité faible

Résumé

This thesis contains three parts. The first concerns the conjecture that the weakness of gravitational interactions between elementary particles, when compared to electromagnetic interactions, is not accidental but a requirement for any theory where gravity can be quantified. We have shown how this "Weak Gravity Conjecture" implies a lower limit to the kinematic mixing value of two abelian gauge fields when present, and we have highlighted the possibility of a new physics observable at future colliders. Finally, we have investigated the possibilities of formulating a similar conjecture, this time comparing gravitational interactions with those due to scalars. The second part consists of an example of the production of gravitational waves by a non-equilibrium gas during the so-called reheating period of the Universe. In particular, if such a signal was detected, we showed that it was possible in principle to distinguish the spin of the particles forming this gas, with the possibility of indirect detection of gravitinos. Finally, the third part presents a particular two Higgs doublet model, the second of which is invisible in current experiments. This suppression is due to a symmetry that removes its couplings to the Standard Model states.
