The Nexus of Individual and Entrepreneurial Opportunity : an analysis in terms of structuration cycle

Despite the success of the entrepreneurial opportunity paradigm, it has failed to provide a solid conceptual foundation for further research advancements on the nexus of individual and opportunity. Recently, researchers seem to have reached a consensus on a definition of a "puzzle" specific to the field of entrepreneurship. This definition emphasizes the nature of the nexus of individual and opportunity. The literature on this nexus makes it possible to distinguish two major opposing approaches, namely, the approach of discovery and that of creation. According to the first approach, the opportunity has an objective existence independent of the entrepreneur who discovers it. As for the second approach, the creation of an opportunity remains a subjective process, the result of social interaction between the entrepreneur and his context. Theoretically, recent scientific advances have clearly shown that it is possible to advance research on the nexus of individual and opportunity, in particular by simultaneously integrating human agency and structure in the conceptualization of this nexus in order to privilege neither the context, nor the action of the entrepreneur in the analysis of the nexus of individual and opportunity. In this sense, the structuration theory has been proposed as a meta-theory allowing the analysis of the nexus of opportunity and entrepreneur. However, methodologically, the structuration theory has been the subject of several criticisms in the literature, in particular its philosophical and abstract character. In order to go beyond the limits of structuration theory and to understand the nexus of individual and opportunity, we mobilize the developments of structuration theory. This work recommends moving away from the relatively abstract concepts of structuration theory, to adopt a more concrete conceptualization affirming methodological and analytical orientations to researchers. Thus, our research aims to analyze to what extent structuration theory and its developments constitutes a theoretical and analytical corpus relevant to the understanding and analyzing the nexus of individual and entrepreneurial opportunity. More specifically, it is about answering the following question: how to conceptualize the nexus of individual and entrepreneurial opportunity: a duality or a dualism? Our thesis is structured around three articles related to the same research question. In line with our object of study, we favored an interpretive epistemological positioning and an abductive methodological approach on the basis of a study of multiple cases for the first and third article, and of a single case study for the second in order to answer this question. We interviewed twelve entrepreneurs repeatedly to guide our empirical study of the three articles. It emerges from this research that the debate on the nexus of individual and entrepreneurial opportunity will not progress without exploring the complementarity between dualism and duality at the level of in-situ ontology. In addition, the thesis proposes an integrative model of the nexus of individual and opportunity which has highlighted the different scripts, external and internal structures mobilized during the process of imagining an opportunity in order to obtain an answer to the debate between the approaches of discovery and creation.
