The Liber de rectoribus christianis is a “mirror” written by the Irish writer Sedulius Scottus, who emigrated to Liège in the 9th century. The expression "mirror of the princes" designates a wide variety of works from Antiquity to modern times. A "mirror" is a treatise written for a prince, describing the ideal sovereign including a whole series of advice on how a prince must conduct themselves and govern their secular state. The Liber de rectoribus chritianis is one of the most original and successful mirrors of the Carolingian era, from an Irish scholar who is widely considered as one of the great intellectuals of the mid-ninth century. If nothing makes possible to known with certainty the prince to whom the work was dedicated, the detailed study of the Liber and its context allows us to deduce that it was most certainly for the attention of Charles the Bald. The manuscript tradition includes eight manuscripts : the manuscript A from Bremen, the manuscript P from the Vatican, the manuscript H from Wolfenbüttel, the manuscript B from Berlin, the manuscript W from Baltimore, the manuscript N from Paris, the manuscript K from Karlsruhe and the manuscript M from Paris. Although, the only critical edition of the text (that of S. Hellmann), which dates from 1909, was only established from the three manuscripts A, P and B. Since then, the discovery of five other manuscripts has necessitated a new edition. The text, prepared for this thesis, takes into account the eight manuscripts, but is as consistent as possible to the A manuscript which is the closest copy to the original. The study of all the manuscripts has also made possible to draw up a new stemma codicum. Furthermore the work has so far only been translated into English and German. Our thesis therefore gives a new critical edition of the Liber, a translation into French with a rich resource of notes, both on the sources, problems of text and interpretation, and an overall study which allows to replace the work in its literary, historical, political and religious context.
