Molecular Bistability in Transition Metal Complexes: Electric Field-Induced Switching and Surface Plasmon Resonance Detection.

Abstract : Nowadays, the technological demands in terms of miniaturization of components such as sensors, devices for electronics and optics stimulate more scientific activity of laboratories worldwide. To this end, the bistable molecular materials seem to show promise for such applications. The addressing and detection of bistability in these materials at the nanoscale is a necessary step in designing such devices. In this context, this thesis presents a novel approach, not only for addressing bistable molecular materials electrically, but also for reading electrically or opticaly the information stored in bistable molecular materials at the nanoscale. We were able to demonstrate their switching between two bistable states by applying an electric field. We also studied theoretically and experimentally the possibility of detecting this switching in thin films using the surface plasmon resonance. We show that SPR technique can detect index variations associated with optical bistability even for ultrathin films (<10 nm). These results open up serious prospects for the integration of complex spin transition or charge transfer in electronic and photonic devices.
