Étude de la reconfigurabilité d'une structure à bande interdite électromagnétique (BIE) métallique par plasmas de décharge

Abstract : Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) structures, a.k.a. photonic crystals in optical physics, are periodical structures granted with complex properties non-existent in other classical materials. For example, they may present a negative refraction index, band gaps, or even highly anisotropic behavior. These properties are governed essentially by the geometrical, and by the constitutive parameters ( E and μ) of elementary objects composing the EBGs. For radiofrequency and microwave devices, exploring and controlling these properties may offer new compelling applications. EBGs are however mostly passive, while active and controllable high frequency devices would prove to be the key to next generation telecommunication technologies. Thus, one of the major research interests is to provide them tunability, with a view to extend further their possible uses. The original aspect in this work lies in using plasma discharges as tunable elements, meant to control an EBG based device. In terms of wave propagation, plasmas possess varying physical parameters ( E and diameter) in function of the discharge conditions. For this concept of tunability, the overall procedures consist in defining a wave-splitting device based on EBG, before integrating high volume and density plasmas (investigated for pressure varying from 40 to 760 Torr). Finally, microwave measurements have been conducted to establish the plasmas' role in the wave propagation control. This thesis, which verge on the junction between two major fields : microwaves and plasma physics, allowed us to ascertain on the possibility of using localized plasma discharges with the aim of controlling different EBG's properties. Following this work, others have been initiated, in order to explore various ideas on microwave propagation control by plasmas. Several of them are shown and described briefly at the end of this thesis.
