Des représentations du temps en wolof

Abstract : This thesis deals with the representations of time in Wolof (a Niger-Congo language spoken in Senegal). Through a semantic and cognitive approach, it studies and gives an account of the various linguistic processes used to express various time relations in Wolof. The first hand collected data is analyzed, via the notion of schema, on the basis of the linguistic mechanisms (lexical as well as grammatical) involved in the construction of meaning. This work also addresses the issue of the relationship between space and time and questions the epistemological nature of the representations (abstract vs spatial and iconic) of temporal terms. The main chapters concern: (i) The verbal system (tense and aspect) as well as the lexical elements and the verbal and nominal phrases which convey an aspectual value; (ii) The adverbial phrases of time (lexemes, nominal and adverbial phrases and subordinate clauses) and the temporal discourse markers; (iii) The temporal and hypothetical subordinate clauses; (iv) The polysemy of some morphemes expressing a temporal value.
