Optimisation of the stereolithography printing process of tricalcium phosphate

The additive manufacturing technologies enable the fast production of objects with a complex shape and are particularly interesting in the medical field and the manufacture of synthetic bone implants. Bioceramics are materials of choice for this type of implant. Amongst them the hydroxyapatite and the tricalcium phosphate β (β-TCP) are biocompatible and biodegradable materials which can help the natural remodeling process of bones. Therefore this work is focused on the optimization of an additive manufacturing process: the stereolithography, applied to β-TCP. The stereolithography is based on the photopolymerization reaction and thus requires the use of suspensions containing a photosensitive resin and the β-TCP powder. The composition of the photosensitive resin strongly influences the rheological behaviour, the reactivity of the suspensions and the quality of the printed parts. A printable suspension with a solid loading of 72.7 wt% was prepared with acrylate monomers such as TGDA, HDDA and also PEG200. The printing parameters of the SLA machine were then adapted and optimized. Finally, the biological properties of printed parts were evaluated. The samples seemed non-cytotoxic and enabled the cellular proliferation and differentiation. Alternative methods of debinding and sintering have been approached and pave the way for an improvement of the overall process.
