TEACHING PROBABILITY IN SECONDARY SCHOOL IN BENIN: CONTRIBUTION OF AN EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH TO LEARNING

ENSEIGNEMENT DES PROBABILITÉS DANS LE SECONDAIRE AU BÉNIN : APPORT D’UNE DÉMARCHE EXPÉRIMENTALE À L’APPRENTISSAGE

Résumé

This thesis includes on the one hand a study relating to the inventory of the teaching and the learning of probabilities, and on the other hand, the experimentation of a didactic engineering for the teaching of probabilities at school from an experimental approach. The methodology of didactic engineering (Artigue, 1998), the concept of didactic transposition and the anthropological theory of didactics (ATD) developed by Yves Chevallard (1991, 1992, 1999), the theory of didactic situations (TDS) of Guy Brousseau (1998) and the analysis methodology following the four components of Alain Bronner (2010) constitute the theoretical framework of this work. The empirical data analyzed are the curricula, the transcriptions of teachers' lessons and experiments, the answers to a questionnaire addressed to teachers and the productions of students relating to tests administered to them. The study of the inventory of the teaching of the elementary calculation of probabilities in Benin revealed that at the level of the concept of random experience, two models of definition, identified at the level of scholar-knowledge, are variously taught, thus filling a didactic void (Bronner, 1997) of the programs in relation to this notion. Teaching the probability of an event in scientific series is based on Kolmogorov's axiomatics and focuses on Laplace's first principle. Mentioned only in the programs of the literary series, the second principle of Laplace appears as an application of the axiom of countable additivity in the scientific series. As for the frequentist approach, it is totally absent from the official instructions and is not known by teachers. On the learning side, obstacles to the notion of chance are identified and could be the basis of the inadequate personal relationship to the notion of random experience in the greatest number of students. The first two principles of Laplace are known to most students, who are not always able to apply them successfully. The didactic engineering developed takes into account the results of the previous diagnostic study and aims to determine favorable conditions to improving the learning of probability calculation, through a teaching based on the frequentist approach. The realization in class of this engineering presented a double advantage: the possibility of teaching probabilities before the final class and the need to study the notion of chance in order to overcome obstacles to the notion of random experience. A post test showed an overall improvement in students' personal relationships with basic probabilistic notions and the elementary calculation of probabilities.
