Modélisation hétérogène de la fatigue des enrobés bitumeux

Abstract : Asphalt mixture’s mechanical properties often depend on the characteristics of its mastic. The latter includes the bitumen and small particles known as fillers. An analysis of bituminous scales (mastic or mortar) can predict the behavior of its corresponding asphalt mix. This thesis focuses on numerically computing and assessing the mechanical properties of bituminous materials i.e. complex modulus and fatigue. The purpose of this study is to validate a numerical method able to assess fatigue damage via a heterogeneous multiscale approach. The modeling was realized using the finite element method (FE). The models consisted of an elastic granular skeleton and a viscoelastic matrix. The granular skeleton was generated in MOA software (French acronym for random object modeler) with respect to a grading curve proper to the studied materials. Under ABAQUS, a finite element software, the fatigue equation was applied to the models. Then, the fatigue damage was computed and presented through visual graphics. Applying the heterogeneous multiscale approach, it was possible to develop a new numerical method to define the damage failure in bituminous mixes. This technique was fairly accurate. It is based on the analysis of damage percentage accumulation in the model. The results showed that the values obtained numerically are similar to the experimental data. An error of less than ten percent was computed throughout the analysis of fatigue damage at the mastic scale. However, at the asphalt scale, this difference is greater due to numerous phenomena such as granular interlocking, viscous dissipation of energy, etc.
