Résumé

Bilateral lung transplantation is emerging as the most promising intervention to treat cystic fibrosis, a respiratory disease which concerns 7,400 patients in France and 85,000 worldwide. The patients’ association “Vaincre la Mucoviscidose” has been involved for thirty years to expose the benefit/risk ratio for this delicate operation, by involving transplant patients with an optimistic testimony, and by relying on committed practitioners. However, the question of the ethical legitimacy of a patient association arises to promote a therapeutic approach that goes beyond the strictly surgical framework. What acceptability, humanizing and contribution can be attributed by the active members of the association, starting with the patients themselves? Among other things, questions of partnership and participatory health democracy are addressed, bringing together the concepts of empowerment of patients grouped together in association, experiential expertise, therapeutic education and patient-resource and trainer, all in service of a proven therapy that remains relevant, alongside promising pharmacological options.
