The microbial and chemical structure of the sea surface microlayer at Guanabara Bay (Brazil)

The surface microlayer (SML) covers the upper millimeter of the water. At the air-water interface, the SML is a unique environment, where microorganisms, organic matter, hydrocarbons and pollutants concentrate. The SML is considered an extreme environment due to high concentrations of pollutants and intense solar radiation. The SML and the underlying water (UW) were collected at 7 stations in Guanabara Bay, Brazil. The SML of the bay was characterized by its hydrocarbons, total bacterial counts and bacterioneuston diversity. Chemical markers analyzed by gas phase chromatography were used to identify the hydrocarbons sources. A total of 43 bacterial strains were isolated and identified, their resistance to UV radiation was evaluated by exposition to simulated solar radiation. The SML at BG is well discriminated with respect to UW, enriched in hydrocarbons and bacteria. The bacterioneuston shows a higher diversity than the bacterioplankton. Most of the bacterial strains tested were resistant to UV radiation and were potentially of great interest for biotechnology.
