Political Practices of Myth. The Official Production of Belgian Colonialism at the International Exhibitions and World's Fairs in Belgium (1897-1958)

This work questions the way the Belgian political colonial fact has been produced and understood in a mythical manner in Belgium, especially studying its official representation at the international exhibitions between 1897 and 1958. It also aims at constructing a general theoretical frame and an empirical method to make political myth a research object. It first deals with the reconstitution of the colonial mythology, diachronically analysing the significations of the symbolical objects exhibited along the period, putting them in a narrative form, and trying to find out the structure of this sequence. It carries on in a more dynamical way, focusing on the meaning with which the practice of this mythology can have been invested by the agents, namely the exhibiting political power and the visiting citizens. I show that there have been transformations in the mythical narrative during the period. These are obviously instrumental in legitimizing the colonial fact and, besides, the political power. Yet, I consider with circumspection their nature of practical political use, considering the limited reflexivity of these amendments of the narrative on behalf of the power holders (that partly tend to believe in the myth in their turn) and the various ways the subjects to power may believe in the myth, that by no means can be restricted to a mechanical adhesion.
