Etude multi-échelle de l'initiation de l'endommagement laser en surface et dans le volume de matériaux optiques.

Abstract : Laser-induced damage is the result of a laser-matter interaction that leads to a physical degradation of optical components and a spoiling of their optical function(s). In dielectric materials and in the nanosecond regime, this phenomena is mainly due to the presence of nanometric precursor centers that initiate the damage. The aim of this thesis is to study characteristics of these precursor centers. We show that a spatial multi-scale study of the laser-induced damage, performed at various wavelengths, allows to discriminate different class of defects, and to observe separately their evolution under multiple irradiations. This study has been applied to laser-induced damage initiated in bulk materials, through the exemple of KH2PO4 crystals (KDP), and at surface, on HfO2 thin films. From a metrological point of view, we show that the discrimination of deferent class of defects affects the laser-induced damage threshold measurement. With the development of a new statistical model coupled with an electromagnetic and thermic model, estimations of the nature and the size of precursor centers existing in the studied materials have been obtained. At last, the case of a damage initiation by surface contaminants has been studied thanks to a photothermal microscope. In this case, a conditioning protocol has been established.
