Grandir avec les autres. Processus de socialisation et évolutions des réseaux personnels

Abstract : Socialization is the process by which an individual builds and renews his social environment, and through which this environment contributes to orient his life course. The individual chooses the people and the social circles he/she frequents, these people and circles in turn make him/her what he/she is. By attending and maintaining relationships with others, the individual is "working" his social inscriptions. He becomes affiliated with similar and dissimilar people, he builts agreements with them, he orients and states his references. Like any process, socialization is shaped over time. I analyze, from empirical data, the issue of dynamics of social networks and process of socialization. How is built the social environment of an individual? How does it affect his decisions? How and with whom is a life course elaborated ? How does this life course in turn change the entourage? How do people become adults in society? Such questions are at the core of understanding the process of socialization. By taking seriously the issues of the plurality of reference systems, the multiplicity of "significant others", the importance of interpersonal relationships and the structure of the system they compose around the individual, I show how important it is to provide the empirical means to realize the promises of a "relational" conception of socialization. I define precisely what constitutes the social "entourage", especially with the contribution of social network analysis and the study of relational dynamics. I then use the concepts of life-course, career and bifurcation, showing what a processual analysis can bring in the study of changes in the logics of action. The introduction, into the system of analysis, of social networks and dynamic perspectives, assert themselves as the central points of my approach to studying the socialization process.
