Analysis of synchronization and leadership emergence in human group interaction

The discovery of the mechanisms involved in group sensorimotor coordination is crucial in many scenarios and is of interest to many disciplines, from psychology to mathematics. Indeed, cognitive sciences and social psychology suggest that the process of coordination helps to strengthen social bond. While interpersonal coordination within human dyads or crowds has been widely analyzed, group situations with a reduced number of agents (N = 5-7) remain poorly studied and rarely captured by a mathematical model. Furthermore, in order to design an avatar capable of regulating group dynamics for the rehabilitation of social disorders, for example to promote patient participation within the group, it is necessary to understand how leadership emerges and how to identify the most influential individual in the group. In this context, a theory of leadership emergence is still missing. The main contribution of this thesis is the experimental investigation and modeling of motor coordination and leadership within the group. We study group sensorimotor synchronization through an oscillatory task performed together (the mirror game). Our work reveals the essential aspects that influence behavior (in particular the similarity between agents and the spatial configuration within the group). We propose a network of heterogeneous coupled oscillators as a mathematical model capable of accounting for the dynamics of coordination observed experimentally. We suggest from our data an innovative definition of sensorimotor leadership, incorporating phase and influence leadership. Finally, we present preliminary results showing the influence of an avatar on the dynamics of synchronization, allowing to better understand the emergence of leadership and to develop artificial agents for the rehabilitation of patients suffering from social disorders (autism for example). The long-term objective of the thesis is the development of a software platform for group tele-rehabilitation, capable of helping medical staff, and minimizing distances, time and treatment cost.
