Design, fabrication and characterization of multijunction solar cells with through cell via contacts

Concentrated photovoltaics consist in converting the solar irradiance, concentrated with lenses or mirrors, into electricity with highly efficient solar cells. Over the past years, there has been some improvements in the solar cell conversion efficiency for concentrated photovoltaics. However, some limitations prevent reaching higher efficiencies at high concentration. Resistive losses due to the high current density and excessive shading caused by the metallization on the front side prevent the possibility of reaching higher efficiency and the power yield per wafer. Through cell via contacts multijunction solar cells could provide a solution to those two limitations. The concept consists in transfering the front side contact towards the back side of the device by using isolated and metallized vias. The proposed project consists in the conception, the fabrication and the characterisation of through cell via contacts multijunction solar cells.
