Résumé

The work of art folder is a documentary tool that appeared in the 1930s at the Musée du Louvre and collects documentation on a specific work of art. Despite the absence of any obligation to do so, its use gradually spread to all French museums between the 1980s and 2010. From a tool for documenting the critical and historical approach to works of art, it has now become a tool for documenting the management of these works in the museum. Its development has taken place in parallel and in the same years as that of the Integrated Collection Management Systems (ICMS). For the museums, we qualify as ICMS the software allowing us to manage the collections through the digital management of the inventory, the movements, the exhibitions, the documentation, etc. These ICMS perceive the web of data, understood as a web where a large volume of data with fine granularity is available, as a documentary horizon. The functions that they offer are thus most often duplicating those of the work of art folder. From this observation, we can therefore make the hypothesis that the folder does not answer the same functions as the ICMS, otherwise the latter would have absorbed or replaced it. The question posed by this thesis is therefore: what does the folder do to the work of art? More specifically, in the context of the digitization of both cultural data and museum management practices (through the ICMS), what does the digitization of the folder induce in terms of information about the work of art? And at the practical level of this industrial thesis, how can the ICMS recover the functions of the folder? The results of this thesis demonstrate that the folder participates in the grammatization of the work of art, by allowing it to be described, formalized and discretized. By this grammatization, the folder sets up the conditions of an analytical manipulation of the work of art, which we qualify as manipulability. We then demonstrate that the data setting introduced by the ICMS and the web of data - aiming at increasing the analyticity of the folder - does not allow to increase the analytic manipulation of the work of art. In fact, the setting in data produces the loss of the synthetic unity of the work. It acts in dispersion, when the folder acts in manipulable synthesis and allows a phenomenological reduction of the work. In order to accompany the analytical gain of the setting in data by a synthetic reinforcement, we propose a new form of grammatization of the work through a life cycle of the cultural goods, which we model through a system of stratum in order to restore the various problems and histories of the work of art. This cycle allows us to instrument the organicity of the work, as a historical becoming between the play of its components on the one hand and its inscription in the histories of what encompasses it on the other hand.
