Understanding and optimisation of the hydraulic and hygroscopic behaviour between surface and volume in raw earth plasters

Raw earth is one of the former building materials. It is a granular mixture in which clay plays a role of binder and it can be implemented as masonry units, monolithic walls, filling material or plaster. In the current context of global warming, a new interest emerges for this material, mainly due to its environmental qualities such as for example its low embodied energy and its circularity. A significant particularity of raw earth is that it exhibits important interactions with water molecules. It allows earth to have an excellent hygrothermal buffering potential for the indoor environment. But, on the other side, it leads to a significant decrease in material strength and stiffness when water content increases. It follows that a too high-water content into this porous building material may lead to the failure of the whole structure while water projections on earthen walls, and in particular wind-driven-rains, may induce strong erosion issues. To protect earthen building facades from water projections, lime-based plasters are classically preferred over unstabilized raw earth ones for maintenance and durability purposes, despite of their higher ecological impact and their lower hygroscopic properties. In addition, plasters with too high vapour resistance factor could be an obstacle of self-regulation in water content of earthen wall. With this in mind, scientific investigations appear to be necessary to consider the feasibility of the enhancement of liquid water resistance while keeping the strong hygroscopic performances of earth plasters. To reach this goal, the present work aims at studying and understanding the hydraulic and hygroscopic behaviour in earth plasters, and in particular of their surface as it is the main entrance of liquid water and vapour. The enhancement of the resistance of the earth plasters to liquid water penetration can be reached by water repellency, which can be achieved thanks to two main methods: a specific surface topography or hydrophobic product usage. A first task was dedicated to plaster formulations, in order to achieve a good discrepancy of surface topography values between all the samples while keeping volume properties relatively close, in order to determine the influence of the surface on hydraulic and hygroscopic exchanges. The results obtained on these samples through several experimental campaigns that have been conducted can be divided in three parts.First, the behaviour of liquid water at the plaster’s surface has been followed and analyzed thanks to experimental wetting set-up connected to a high speed camera device. The observation and understanding of the hydraulic behaviour inside the plaster has been made possible by the X-ray microtomography method. Then, static and dynamic water vapour exchanges in earth plasters were measured with experimental procedures as wet-cup, sorption/desorption, or modified MBV. The existence of a water vapour film surface resistance and its link with surface topography has been proven. A last campaign has been led to assess the efficiency of the hydrophobic product usage. The most efficient biopolymer products have been chosen among several products tested. Numerous samples have been made to obtain a combination of surface topography, type of biopolymer and method of application. The efficiency of biopolymer added earth plasters were evaluated with Geelong tests and accelerated erosion tests, while measuring its hygroscopic remaining performances. After this study, we are able to propose an efficient earth plaster formulation to improve water durability while maintaining strong hygroscopic properties.
