Michel Pêcheux and Michel Foucault’s theorisations of discourse in the light of the concept of enunciation

Pêcheux and Foucault probably never met in their intellectual adventure. Yet they share a word - 'discursive formation' - and an object of interest - 'discourse'. In this thesis, we approach Pêcheux's and Foucault's theorisations of discourse through the theoretical locus where we believe they meet: enunciation. In this thesis, we construct a philosophical concept on the basis of a linguistic category.Pêcheux and Foucault have spoken about enunciation, but in a roundabout way. They opposed each other, they also contradicted themselves. This is why our reading of enunciation is a symptomatic reading: it goes back to the core of the difficulty from the identification of obstacles. Our authors encounter three of them in the field of language, history and subject. They cling to proper names: Saussure, Althusser, Lacan. By listening to the misunderstandings, we can shift the difficulties, and provide new light on the epistemology of discourse analysis. In this "return to the sources", we intend to draw new concepts for practice: this is what we do by studying Pêcheux's preconstruct - an indirect tool for observing ideology - and Foucault's unexpected theory of discourse genres, independent of Bakhtin, and associated with the discursive counterpart of disciplinary normalisation. In order to test our hypotheses, we will read Pêcheux and Foucault through each other, taking up the corpus of Foucault and Farge's Désordre des familles to carry out a discourse analysis based on linguistics and on textual data statistical analysis. In this way, we can return to the word 'discursive formation', which has crept up to the present day, and give it conceptual and practical support.
