Characterization of literary styles by automatic extraction of syntactic patterns in 19th century French novels
How can automatic syntactic analysis be useful to identify and characterize literary styles? In this thesis, we propose to answer this question by considering syntactic patterns as efficient stylistic markers to identify, but also to characterize literary styles in 19th century French novels. The method for extracting characterising patterns (i.e. syntactic figures of speech) and the method for extracting identifying patterns (whose specificity is of a purely statistical nature) are applied to the novels of Victor Hugo on the one hand, and to a larger corpus, consisting of the novels of Chateaubriand, Flaubert, Hugo and Stendhal on the other. Our combinatorial method demonstrates the satisfactory capacity of syntactic patterns to differentiate literary styles, and makes it possible to confirm (or, on the contrary, sometimes contradict) past observations on the styles of the authors concerned.
