Nikephoros Basilakes’s Progymnasmata. Critical edition with translation and commentary
Les Progymnasmata de Nicéphore Basilakès. Édition critique, traduction et commentaire
I progimnasmi di Niceforo Basilace. Edizione critica, traduzione e commento
Résumé
Nikephoros Basilakes was a Constantinopolitan rhetor and professor of the mid-12th century. His collection of progymnasmata is one of the widest and most complete collections of rhetorical exercises preserved. His fifty-six exercises form a heterogeneous collection in terms of length, composition, and complexity, and represent seven out of the fourteen types of progymnasmata provided for by the Byzantine school practice. The collection is made up of seven fables, sixteen narrations, three sentences, a refutation, a confirmation, an encomium and twenty-seven ethopoeiae. This research thesis offers a new critical edition of the entire collection of Basilakes’s Progymnasmata, together with an Italian translation and a commentary of each exercise, particularly focusing on the sources and models employed. The introduction preceding the text offers an overview concerning Basilakes’s career and writings and a brief description of the manuscript tradition. The thesis concludes with two attachments : an extended summary (in French) and a list of the ecdotic changes occurring in the edition as against the previous critical edition.
