Superstructure and parametric optimization of processes in algae biomass thermochemical valorization.
Thermochemical conversion of algae into energy or into an energy carrier is really attractive in terms of carbon accounting. However, such pathways have not been yet widely exploited, mainly, because of some characteristics of this biomass (high moisture and ash contents). In this study, a process composed of three main stages, pretreatment, conversion and post conversion, was defined and investigated. Possible unit operations involved in such stages were listed, converted into mathematical models and then grouped together into an optimization algorithm to set up a MINLP problem. The resulting tool was used to compute the best valorization process structure with respect to the sequence of unit operations and their associated operating conditions. Two species of algae were considered, Chlorella Vulgaris (microalgae) and Ulva lactuca (macroalgae), to evaluate the ability of the tool to design processes for the production of heat, syngas, H2 and CH4.
