Simulation of induction heating phenomena. Application to induction hardening problems.

Simulation des phénomènes de chauffage par induction. Application à la trempe superficielle.

Résumé

Any electric conducting material exposed to a variable magnetic field develops eddy currents, therefore warms up by Joule effect. The distribution of the eddy currents depends on the shape of this material, of that of the inductor, the frequency and the amplitude of the field, as well as physical properties of materials. The induction heating is a technique adapted well to the heat treatments out of metallurgy. However it is necessary to dimension the inductors well in order to have an optimal process. Considering the number of parameters to be taken into account for this study, it seems adequate and necessary to have recourse to digital techniques. In this work, after having described the physical phenomena and mathematical principles, the numerical methods of analysis adapted to the magnetodynamic and thermal problems, one presents a model for the magnetothermal coupling applied to the problems of induction heating for hardening. This coupling calls upon the boundary integral method associated with linear or non linear surface impedances for the electromagnetic part, and with the 3D finite element method for the thermal part. An industrial 3D problem of induction heating is solved as illustration, by using software PHI3D (magnetodynamic, modified) and FLUX-EXPERT (thermal) controlled by a supervisor, which automates the process.
