Evaluation of the calculation methods of retaining wall design based on back-analysis from recent major works

The Grand Paris Express project involves the construction of numerous new metro stations, where most of the retaining walls are multi-strutted diaphragm walls. This work proposes an analysis of numerous measurements’ results carried out on three stations of the southern section of Line 15 and a comparison between the behaviors observed and the results of calculations by the finite element method and the subgrade reaction coefficient method. The aim is to improve not only the knowledge of the behavior of deep excavations in Parisian soil layers, but also to deepen the understanding of the calculation methods, to define their limits and the precision that can be expected, and to point out inconsistencies between different approaches. The first part of the thesis presents a state of the art on different types of instrumentation systems that can be used to monitor the behavior of geotechnical structures. Specific examples of inconsistencies between predictive methods and instrumentation installed on full-scale excavations have been highlighted. Two case studies described in literature are discussed in detail to draw attention to the essential role of defining the models’ input parameters. The second part thoroughly describes three case studies of deep excavations that are part of southern section of Line 15 of the Grand Paris Express metro extension: Les Ardoines, Vitry Centre and Créteil l'Echat stations. In addition to the monitoring program initially planned for these sites, complementary instrumentation systems were installed as part of this thesis to obtain information on the pressures at the interface between the diaphragm wall and the ground, the bending moments in the diaphragm wall and the settlements behind it during excavation works. The results of the monitoring systems are compared with each other, then with predictive models. In the third part, we propose a summary of all the instrumentation results as well as of the calculations carried out for all three sites. The common elements as well as the differences between the behaviors of the three sites are underlined. The amount of data collected makes it possible to draw conclusions on the behaviors of steel props as well as diaphragm walls. We also seek to introduce useful recommendations for the modeling of this type of structures, specifically the choice of the different input parameters for both predictive methods, with the aim of designing similar structures. At last, a discussion is oriented on the organization of monitoring programs for such large infrastructure projects in order to improve the reliability and understanding of instrumentation data
