Résumé

Libraries in dark times are the granaries of which Marguerite Yourcenar spoke in her novel “Memoirs of Hadrian”, a place of refreshment and a source of energy for the soul, so that it does not get lost and courageously continues the journey of life and research.Memory Institutions, libraries are outposts of cultural formation. They implement welfare and personal support policies, contribute to social well-being, facilitate integration and intercultural dialogue. This thesis responds to the questions set out in the “Problématique”, in which we wonder about the meaning that libraries have today in a restless world, lashed by crisis and conflicts. We approach the library not only in its “institutional” dimension, but from a multifocal point of view, aiming to capture different aspects of its identity: cultural, architectonic, social, symbolic, communicative. From this perspective, the elements that underlie the complexity of the library are studied with an interdisciplinary approach and with analytical procedures involving qualitative methodologies. The objective is to outline a wide and panoramic interpretation model, capable of accounting for the multiplicity of “library” reality.Libraries make use of modern information and communication technologies to fulfil their mission. Facilitate access to documents (printed publications or digital resources) in the library or by remote access; digitize heritage collections to make them available to all those who, near or far, wish to see them; using social media as a two-way communication channel: these are some of the challenges that libraries have faced in recent years. The raison d'être of libraries in the past and in the present lies in the need for man and society of a valid tool for the preservation and communication of written memory in all its formats, and to provide human, cultural and social formation. As living, growing organism (as the librarian Ranganathan said), the library acquires shape and characteristics from the society which originates it. Today we can say that two principal models of public library coexist: the classic and traditional Library, which houses rare and precious collections, and the public library, the library as “third-place”, which responds to the needs of today's society by creating a human and cultural space, which welcomes and supports, especially those who need it most, in a democratic spirit. The preparation of this thesis allowed me to broaden my horizon on libraries, a world that I have frequented since my youth, and to go and discover a diversity of institutions in Italy and France: my experience on libraries constitutes a whole that I have questioned and reorganized in the perspective of the “Problématique” of the thesis. In this thesis I have dealt with two public libraries located in two towns in the hinterland of Turin (Italy). With their welcoming environments and the quantity and quality of resources available to users, they shape the model of library that responds to the information and social needs of the community. The third library I have dealt with is a patrimonial library, which conserve an extraordinary bibliographic and artistic heritage. This is the Royal Library in Turin, created in the first half of the nineteenth century in the complex of the Royal Palace. It is registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List with the ensemble of Residences of the Royal House of Savoy.
