Based on the main sources of the story of Alexander the Great, we have sought to highlight, the heroic models on the one hand, the warrior models on the other hand, as well as all the qualities that form the basis of a thought in terms of strategy and tactics of the conqueror's own war conceptions. By a work of crossing sources and the choice of a study in the form of a narrative, we tried to shed an original light on the particular relationship that Alexander and his different models maintain, with their conception of combat and the virtues of fighting to achieve the supreme ideal both warrior and heroic: the aristeia. This is the very essence of what Alexander must seek to achieve in order to maintain his legitimacy as hègémôn of the League of Corinth, king of the Macedonians and heir of Philip. And the nature of this paternal legacy is very clear from the start. It's about overcoming no matter what. This absolute necessity to win leads Alexander to adopt an art of war, which is also a science in this case (we are thinking of poliorcetics in particular), deeply Homeric. But he's reinventing it, pushing the boundaries of what his father envisioned as part of his plan to invade Asia. His personal exploits further testify to his desire to surpass his initial models. Yet he acts in perfect accordance with the Homeric paradigm, a true code of conduct for the army chief as much as for the private soldier. Like Homeric heroes, Alexander is a promachos. This is one of the keys to effective leadership. On the other hand, we have noted, in the sources dealing with the periods preceding the work of conquest of Philip and his son, precious examples of victories obtained by the combination of warlike virtues among strategists, which are specific to their prestige to serve as models for Alexander, from his youth. In the art of war, as Carl von Clausewitz reminds us, empiricism predominates. Finally, we especially set ourselves the objective of showing how, in the thought of war proper to Alexander, the excellence of all that preceded him culminates, including the adaptability so dear to Xenophon but also to Philip, but above all an art of governing by personal merit acquired on the battlefield. Alexander and his Macedonians do not reproduce the heroic exploits which inspire them so much, they pose themselves as models for posterity, truly admirable and unequaled.
