Vertical Belle Époque : approche par la science-fiction de la notion d'espace en socio-anthropologie

Abstract : This work leads a double reflection on the theoretical place of the notion of space in socio-anthropology and the use of science fiction (SF) literature in the methodology of the discipline.Historical considerations show how space is first thought in the Western world by philosophy and the natural sciences for their own sake, in more or less distant relation with spatial practices. Then, during the constitution of the social sciences, the notion finds itself at the heart of interdisciplinary struggles, which leads to its relative occultation in sociology. A new interest in space has been emerging for a few decades, but without a real theoretical corpus having emerged yet.In this context, the use of SF appears to be one way among others to free the sociological imagination. Its relevance is based on two observations: it is a literature of distanciation, which allows for the risking of various theoretical objects in new contexts; on the other hand, it has a characteristic tendency to thematize space. These preliminary reflections are then followed by an attempt at concrete experimentation of this methodology on the field of the constitution of the vertical dimension in the Western world around the 1880s. After a first theoretical framing of the socio-anthropological vertical based on Martina Löw's recent synthesis on the sociology of space (2016), as well as on James Gibson's work, the study is carried out thanks to three works: Robur-le-Conquérant by Jules Verne, Le Vingtième Siècle by Albert Robida and Ignis by Didier de Chousy.Based on the different thematic and narrative structures, several ideal-types of the constitution of the vertical in the Belle Époque can be identified, the most salient of which are the schemes of the Parade and the Urban Vertical Complex, which bring together numerous symbolic and sensitive dimensions of spacing and spatial synthesis. These ideal-types are likely to become guides for an empirical socio-historical study.
