The question of duration, in the architectural theory of modernity, arises through that of the relationship of project time to the homogeneous and empty time of linear production processes. But the time of the project differs according to whether one situates the architecture inside or outside the production system. Within the productive system, the project, animated by the relations of production, imposes a destructive temporality. In Walter Benjamin's words, the project oscillates between a “mythical violence”, which petrifies architecture by destroying the historical conditions of its construction, and a “divine violence”, making architecture transparent to the play of social forces, and thereby stealthy. The external and critical relationship of the project to the productive system is, on the contrary, a dialectical relationship, which transforms the natural or social environment while preserving it. This dialectic structures the Valeryan definition of architecture as "passage from the useful to the useless", and its lineage in modern architecture, from Auguste Perret to Le Corbusier.
